trailer - the weight of a nation
HBO will be releasing a four-part documentary on the obesity epidemic in the US. i hope this is an eye-opener for many.
jabba the hummus
the only time when i’ll ever say, “i want a taste of jabba!”
retro running
meanwhile in italy, people are running backwards competitively. the sport of retro running is gaining popularity in the UK as well. i guess potentially tripping and slamming the back of your noggin into the ground is better than face-planting. what a strange idea.
hiking - bridge to nowhere
i headed out to the san gabriel mountains for a hike on saturday. it’s roughly a 10-mile hike that took our bunch about two hours to get to the bridge and probably a little quicker to get back (4-5ish hours total). once you arrive at the bridge, you’ll come across some very amped up and anxious folk building up the courage to launch themselves off the bridge.. connected by a bungee cord of course (second photo). while giving our feet a rest and re-fueling with healthy snacks, there was no shortage of entertainment.
most of the trail is through river beds and lush green foliage, which is pleasant to the eyes. i’d consider it a pretty easy, though somewhat lengthy hike. there are more than a handful of river crossings that require good balance and coordination. i lost my footing on a narrow log and fell into the water that came up thigh-high. in the wetter season, the water can get up to waist high! very exciting :) staying dry throughout the hike is highly unlikely. a good amount of time was spent sloshing around water and pebbles in my socks and shoes. you can believe that they smelled absolutely wonderful the next day when i neglected to rinse them out.
i’d definitely hike the trail again. it’s a fun one and isn’t too taxing on the body.
i could never settle on good. good is never good enough in my world. aim toward the better and get to your best!
me - 2:38 - 3:14
i’ve been working on the second pull in both the snatch and clean at waxman’s gym recently. sean has me lifting from above the knees with the bar starting on boxes. the drill forces me to drive with my legs and pull from the proper position. i have a tendency to get on my toes too soon though, which causes me to land forward. i can get away with it at light weight, but that’s not going to cut it with heavy weight.
i struggle with consistency and will continue to do so unless i can get more training time at his gym. i intend to train specifically in weightlifting three times a week beginning next week. i’m impatient and want speedier progress!

today’s workout was programmed in honor of fallen soldier, ricardo antonio crocker, who was a SMPD/SWAT operator. the workout is actually prescribed with rope climbs, but with only two at dogtown, it didn’t make logistical sense to include them. the running portion was awful, as usual.
i’ve moved on from wall balls to goblet squats. i think the underlying problem of my pathetic attempts to wall ball is weakness in my quads. they may be strong in short spurts, but don’t receive enough training for high volume. the kettlebell will be my new best friend for the next couple of weeks!
time to man up!

goblet squats are killer on your quads. i’m going to try working on these guys instead of wall balls. i’m bored of wall balls after doing them for the past couple of weeks. time for something new!

of all the vendors, waxman’s gym had the most attractive banner. it read “FIX YOUR SHITTY FORM.” loved it, so i rocked their sticker on my fedora the rest of the day.
