hiking - bridge to nowhere
i headed out to the san gabriel mountains for a hike on saturday. it’s roughly a 10-mile hike that took our bunch about two hours to get to the bridge and probably a little quicker to get back (4-5ish hours total). once you arrive at the bridge, you’ll come across some very amped up and anxious folk building up the courage to launch themselves off the bridge.. connected by a bungee cord of course (second photo). while giving our feet a rest and re-fueling with healthy snacks, there was no shortage of entertainment.
most of the trail is through river beds and lush green foliage, which is pleasant to the eyes. i’d consider it a pretty easy, though somewhat lengthy hike. there are more than a handful of river crossings that require good balance and coordination. i lost my footing on a narrow log and fell into the water that came up thigh-high. in the wetter season, the water can get up to waist high! very exciting :)Â staying dry throughout the hike is highly unlikely. a good amount of time was spent sloshing around water and pebbles in my socks and shoes. you can believe that they smelled absolutely wonderful the next day when i neglected to rinse them out.
i’d definitely hike the trail again. it’s a fun one and isn’t too taxing on the body.
crossfit southbay and dogtown crossfit hangin’ out at the crossfit games 2012, southern california regionals.
of all the vendors, waxman’s gym had the most attractive banner. it read “FIX YOUR SHITTY FORM.” loved it, so i rocked their sticker on my fedora the rest of the day.
heavy gun? pffftt. girl, i workout!
having a blast shooting moving clay targets at triple b clays in el monte.
12.5 day at dogtown crossfit, documenting the crossfit open finale.
like last year, it was challenging, humbling, and especially motivating. no other environment has ever motivated and pushed me so greatly to get better at what i do, which is why crossfit has been such an amazing experience for me. for almost two years now, it continues to test my strength, patience, will power, and discipline, and i have always and will continue to openly accept the challenge of making self-improvements every day.
any place, person, or environment that encourages and feeds your desire to be a better anything is truly a rare gem and something you could always learn and benefit from. if it makes you a better you, don’t ever stop.
my landlord gave me the wrong set of keys on move-in day, so we had to find a way in. i was able to take full advantage of my hobbit-pyhsique! woo!
only hobbits :)
and this is what i like to do at my annual company parties: rock a unibrow.
my first bruise from a jerk. that bastard!
waxman’s gym video #40
i’m the first person, performing two power snatches and two cleans.
some very kind words in the caption:
- Ting (Dogtown CrossFit), one of our newest athletes. She’s been training for a couple months and she’s just starting to lift from the floor. If she decided to commit to weightlifting full-time, I have no doubt she would be a national champion at 48k within a fairly short time.
i might have to start getting some more weighlifting time in.
the reebok crossfit racerback sports bra available here for $45.
thanks to my miniature stature, val voboril couldn’t fit the extra small sports bra that crossfit HQ sent her so she handed it over to me. awwwhhhh yeaaa! it fits pretty comfortably. i like that it’s padded inside. so long, fripples! the one thing i dislike about it is that it’s very difficult to remove, but then again, it could be that’s it’s just too small. i struggled for a good minute or two before i was able to strategically slide my arms out and slowly glide it down toward the ground. there was no way it was going up over my shoulders.
it’s a nice sports bra, but i wouldn’t buy it at that price. i prefer a greater degree of elasticity.
went boarding in big bear this past sunday, and it was surprisingly cold. the weather was perfect in the morning and the lines were curiously short. you would think that it’d be crowded the day before a holiday. then it started snowing and raining in the afternoon, which prompted our early departure.
i ate it once pretty hard, attempting to hit a small box. i veered off the side and fell into ice. other than that, it was pretty smooth sailing with a few tiny slip-ups. next time around, i’m going skiing! i miss it so..
i took a hydrostatic body fat test today or as many people know it, the dunk tank test. this is the most accurate assessment of body fat percentage and lean mass where your body composition is measured by water displacement. pound for pound, muscle and fat both displace a known amount of water (fat floats). so if you know someone’s weight, you’ll know exactly how much water they would displace if they were 100% muscle. measure that against how much they actually displace and you’ll know exactly the percentage of lean mass and fat mass their body is composed of.
this is my fifth test and i’m liking the results i’m seeing. for over a year, my fat-free mass or lean muscle mass has steadily increased with the exception of today’s indication of a 0.20 loss in lean mass over the past four months.. which i think is due largely in part to my more recent month of stress-starving habits from work. the 1/5 pound drop in lean mass is a minor setback that i can alter. i haven’t seen any decreases in strength yet, so the 0.20 is likely insignificant.
i won’t let my lean mass slip any more.. time to get back on track.
GIVE ME MORE MASS!

dogtown crossfit representing at the wod gear team series yesterday at the jack kemp stadium in occidental college. two of our teams landed in top 10 out of 55 teams that competed. although i’ve only been to three crossfit competitions, this one was by far the most enjoyable. we even had a baby on our team.
GO DOGTOWN! :)
probably not a good idea to tape your fingers too tightly when lifting weights. in my defense, i was covering up a cut. the tape didn’t allow for enough blood flow through my finger and caused some internal bleeding. not painful, but somewhat tender. lesson learned.
